On Design
I have never formally studied costumes or interiors, photography or graphics, but design and the act of creation has been an integral part of my life. My mother was constantly trying to decorate the house and there was always a stack of decorating magazines that would migrate from one tabletop to another. She was also an avid amateur photographer, carpenter and seamstress. When I was five, she taught me to sew. When I was twelve, I was holding the sheet of plywood while she ripped it with the circular saw. On every trip we ever took we stopped every forty seconds to capture a new photo opportunity. I am forever grateful to her for her fervor, passion and adventurous spirit. Whether by way of nature or nurture, I am glad I share those qualities.
As I mature into my own artistic skin, I realize how passionate I am about design. One of my favorite pastimes is roaming the Fashion District of Manhattan and fingering various upholsteries, linens, silks, chiffons, crepes, etc., and elaborating each fabric's story in my mind. Some are subdued salons, others are the raiments of royalty. I long for the day when I have the resources to exhibit each to its full potential.
Beyond fabric, I also dabble in graphic design and photography. I have no talent for drawing but I discovered an instinct for composition regardless. In my photographic journeys of late, a distinct and austere style has emerged in my work. I'm particularly fond of the American Southwest, abandoned buildings, and ghost towns. As with my appetite for fabric, I hope to one day journey the world, capturing fractions of stillness, beauty, life, and decay. |
