Admittedly, this observation is going to sound callous and perhaps even in poor taste but I'm afraid I can't help myself. I came across an article in the Daily News last Sunday about a man who was the victim of a hit-and-run in Queens, NY. In no way do I condone the act, nor do I make light of a family's grieving, but I can't help but feel like he had it coming. That's an awfully strong statement, you say? Read on...
I didn't know the man personally but the article reports that he was on medication and so had not been drinking during the evening's Fourth of July celebrations. Good for him for obeying doctor's orders. But the meds? I believe we'll call this strike one in Death's record keeping book.
The article then reports he was a supervisor for an asbestos removal firm. Wow. Death? I believe you have strike two!
Finally, the accident was witnessed by a livery cab driver parked nearby who claims that the poor victim in question was jaywalking across the street when oncoming traffic had the green light and therefor the right-of-way. Granted, it was at five o'clock in the morning and likely deserted, but you must admit that Death, having failed with the asbestos and thwarted by prescription medication, was probably getting very frustrated.
My heart goes out to his family and I hope he can rest in peace. Maybe they can write this tragedy into a movie script and reap large sums of money from its sale. Oh, wait! I think Hollywood's already been there - it was called "Final Destination."
